Being a woman means all of this and much more. Fulfilling all the roles and responsibilities that life has assigned to them, they walk ahead. Many strong women have bedecked the land of Kerala with the flowers of their tenacity and grit. On the International Women’s Day, let us take you to the world of our Inventors and Entrepreneurs, Adventurers and Explorers, Activists, Artists and Musicians.
These women are indeed the makers of change who have set an example of ingenuity and hard work. How did they turn their ideas into realities? Let us get inspired by these handpicked success stories involving the doughty women of Kerala:
1. Age couldn't get her down, she is a Champion
Sword & shield, flying heaps and kicks, stretching chest & shoulders, crouching low with unblinking eyes. Now visualize a 76-year-old lady with unbeatable attitude performing this art.
Meenakshi Gurrukkal is the oldest woman practitioner of ‘Kalaripayattu', the ancient martial arts of Kerala (Vadakara). Skilled in the art, Meenakshi started when she was six and has been passing this art through generations. She has been bestowing the wealth of flexibility, endurance, concentration, and patience. Perhaps, Age is just a state of mind and life can be such fun!
2. Kudumbashree – Bringing prosperity into families
This initiative taken by the Government of Kerala for women empowerment and poverty eradication has many success stories. Eloquent tales of women leaders, startup enterprises, agricultural groups etc are resonating all over Kerala owing to this three-tier structure of women community network set up in 1997.
3.Trailblazers of Mollywood
Real beauty comes from being your authentic self and expressing it. Mollywood is witnessing a transformation with these daring actresses making bold statements in the domains of socio-politics, feminism, and misogyny in films. Actresses like Manju Warrier, Parvathy, Rima Kallingal are creating a difference by expressing unconventional views and making their voices count.
4.Traversing Dark Places
Out-of-the-box thinkers rise above the gross, to view a situation panoramically. They break social taboos - Prohibitions that closes one’s mind to new discoveries. Artist Indu Hariharan, Political Journalist Rohini Mohan, Leela Menon, Aruna Roy (Social & Political activist) have successfully tried to fetch new perspectives in the society.
